Note: I read this because it looked interesting, completely ignoring the fact that it was book 5 in a series. Doing this was not a problem; the story is perfectly capable of standing on its own. I gave this book 2 stars because the story was interesting, but the execution was lacking.The author tells you what is happening and how the characters feel about it, rather than bringing the emotions to life. This is perfectly fine in a first draft, but quality writing draws you into the story and brings it to life before your eyes.An example: "A rush of dread shot up his arm and chilled his heart." [Nice job author, good description!]Next paragraph (still in climatic scene): "The scene was horrible and cruel; how did this happen was the painful thought that screamed through his mind." [Um... what? Yeah, it's horrible and cruel, but that's supposed to be the *reader's* takeaway, not what the author says! The author is supposed to describe what the character saw, felt, smelled, tasted, experienced, etc. that *made* the experience horrible.]Also, the author needs to discover the use of question marks and exclamation points. I did not see any in this book, even where grammar would dictate their usage. Dashes can also be used for dramatic effect. There were some other grammatical concerns and word choice problems (composure is not composer).My advice would NOT be to hire an editor at this stage, but to find a friend with a solid grasp of English grammar and composition, and then ask that friend to read the manuscript and provide some pointers.Over all, a promising first draft. With a LOT of work, it could be polished into a gem.Author, if you love the story, put in the work required--writing and re-writing--until you have brought it to life. Otherwise, consider this a learning experience and do better next time. Don't be afraid to reach out to authors and join writing groups; there are a lot of resources available if you truly want to improve. Another awesome book in this series. B A Stretke as usual never disappoints. Ira has finally found his beloved. Unfortunately it was not in the best of circumstances. They met on a plane going back to Mt. Pleasant and Sawyer was in between two sheriff deputies in handcuffs. And so their adventures begin. As always it was nice to catch up with previous cast of characters. I highly recommend reading this book and the entire series.
